About me
My name is Jennie and I’m a feminist ad-buster and host of a feminist/women’s radio program.
The aspects of feminism that interest me the most are body image, self esteem and the way women are represented in advertising and media.
About my ad-busting
Ad-busting is a form of culture jamming. The purpose is to subvert, challenge or disrupt the advertisers intended meaning by inserting my own message. By transforming an ad to produce a negative commentary about itself, my message becomes more powerful than the original.
My goal is to make the implicit explicit. I want to make people aware of what they’re seeing but not noticing.
Why do I bother ad-busting? Because most fashion, beauty, food and lifestyle advertisements aimed at women work by making us feel bad about ourselves. Advertisers sell products to us by making us feel fat, ugly, wrinkly, etc. and then offering a cure for our “problems” through the consumption of their product.
I have been ad-busting since 2005 and teaching others how to do it since 2006. I’ve given presentations and workshops on ad-busting and the representation of women in advertising to women’s studies classes at universities and for numerous youth groups.
